WLUC TV6 Gets a Facelift: What do you think of the new logo?

Posted September 10, 2008 | Share this | Leave a comment

Across the Upper Peninsula TV6 is a staple. It is the go-to source for news in the Upper Peninsula, from Ironwood to Sault Ste. Marie and from Copper Harbor to Menominee. Their logo (their old logo now, that is) is arguably the most recognizable logo in the Upper Peninsula among local businesses.

However, TV6 is no longer “Someplace special”. They have moved on from their old logo and slogan. Here is an excerpt from their own news story on their website…

TV6 has a whole new look. It’s all part of our dedication to take you into the future of television and the Web. Our new logo and our color scheme is fresh and futuristic.

We’re well into the 21st century now, and we thought it was time for a change.

Personally, I have a few bones to pick with the new logo. Hey this a blog, it’s supposed to be opinionated.

Branding is a difficult task for businesses to achieve. What’s even more difficult than that is rebranding. From the outside it seems that the “Someplace special” slogan and rainbow TV6 logo has worked well over the years. For well over a decade (can anyone verify how long they’ve had this combination?) they have branded themselves to the 300,000+ citizens of the Upper Peninsula. They created a very recognizable logo and slogan that Yoopers all became familiar with. Rebranding in a sense is like starting over.

Growing up I always remember noticing the TV6 news cars on the highway somewhere. All I had to see was that rainbow logo. But now if people see a news car without that TV6 logo it’s very likely they’ll ask themselves, “What news station is that?”. Though it clearly still says TV6, it loses that recognizability that I have known my entire life. (For those of you visiting the site who are not familiar with the Upper Peninsula, TV6 is essentially the only news station in the entire Upper Peninsula.)

In terms of the new logo, it looks good. It’s professional, clean, and modern. My gripe, however, is that they carried nothing over from the classic logo that we have all come to know so well. The largest brands in the world update their logos from time to time, AT&T, Pepsi, Microsoft… but it’s a very rare thing for them to completely change their logo. Though I admit their old logo was a bit outdated, I wish they had somehow incorporated a part of the classic rainbow color scheme.

Take a look at their logos, vote on the poll below, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

To go along with their new logo they have created a new slogan as well to replace “Someplace Special”. Their new slogan is “Upper Michigan’s Source”.

According to the TV6 website they are seeking opinions from readers and viewers…

We’ve also adapted our new slogan out of that dedication. We’ll be Upper Michigan’s Source for news, weather, and sports from around the world, 24 hours a day.

Not only that, but we want to hear from you…your opinions, your letters, your pictures, your video. wluctv6.com will be a true partnership between you and TV6.

…But our look has changed, and since you’re seeing this for the first time, we’d like to get your reaction. Be sure to vote in our Web poll on the homepage, asking if you like the new look.

While I appreciate their efforts, it seems as though they would have asked for viewers suggestions before changing their logo. And perhaps they did and we missed it. But, after the fact seems to be a little late.

Please let us know your opinion. And if you would like to share more of your thoughts please comment below, we would love to hear it.

Certainly looks more professional than the old one…

I like the new slogan much better — it says a lot more about who they are as a TV station.

However — the new logo? Totally generic, boring, not eye-catching at all. Looks like something they were forced to use by some sort of corporate owner. Do you know if they are locally-owned or if they are owned by one of the news corporations (ie Gannett)?

The old logo needed to be updated, but not totally left behind. Boo.

I don’t like the logo at all. It doesn’t say anything about anything, it’s just a futuristic looking thing. It looks like a second rate big city tv station’s logo.

I also don’t like the Upper Michigan line, very generic. There are stations downstate that use that line. Give the U.P. it’s dues and say Upper Peninsula!

    I do love TV6 though. :)

After attending NMU in the early 80’s and coming back and watching WLUC when I would look at my property and watching the newscast on the web. I got to love the logo and even bought a license plate with the “Someplace Special” on it. It is just another thing like the Bunny Bread ears that used to be on Washington and blinked back and forth.

The new LoGo stinks….It has no punch. The rainbow, now that is special to everyone. They blew it with bland, no class, no anything.

I don’t care for the logo or the slogan. I’m not saying not to change them, but these examples are too generic and boring…(”Upper Michigan’s Source”…source of what?

The old logo definetly fit TV6. The new one is almost the complete opposite of the old one, very generic and non-personal, and the new one should of at least included an outline of the UP, one of the most recognizable landmarks of North America. They should of used that to show who they are and who they deliver the news to.

Wow, when I wrote this I had no idea so many people would vote against it. Truly, I love my TV6. It’s one of a kind. I hope I didn’t not encourage others to disapprove of the new logo as well.

It’s been very interesting to hear all of your comments. There is no denying that TV6 is a huge staple of the Upper Peninsula.

Debbie, to answer your question, TV6 is corporately owned, although I can’t remember by who. My boyfriend used to work there and his checks didn’t come from tv6 they came some some other company.

    Meghan and Debbie…

To answer your question this is pulled from Wikiepedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WLUC-TV)

As of August 2006 TV6 is owned by Barrington Broadcasting of Barrington, IL. They own over a dozen stations across the United States.

The article has a pretty extensive history of the ownership.

I love the new logo for tv6, even though I am older, change is good, it does not have to say something, the future is 2mins from now, and the past is 1 sec ago, roll with it….

I hate it I’ve always love rainbow! :(

I agree that it looks generic. Part of the “trend” created by the global elite to make everything look the same everywhere.

I agree with Tom 100% I was actually going to mention the same thing.(about the “global elite”)
even if you were joking there really is something to that.

Also, the new logo looks bland and looks more like a number I would expect to see on the side of one of the animated cars in the movie “Cars”

I think they have too much blue in their set design too…..blue blue blue!!! TV 6 needs to Pay some money and Hire a set designer and get some contrasting colors or at least take a look at the sets of the National NBC news shows.

Anyone know if/when TV 6 is going to upgrade to HD cameras? I have an HDTV and it always takes a few seconds to go back to standard def when they go back to tv 6 for the local weather and there’s no sound so i always miss the last few words and the first few words, I cant wait until there on the same standard.

My mom asked me what I wanted for xmas. I lived in Gladstone as a child and always remembered the “Upper Michigan Someplace Special’ logo and told her after 22 years of being away I wanted a sweatshirt or t-shirt. Now I live in Alabama and I wanted to show off Upper Michigan. Well now after looking at the new logo I can tell mom NOT…I was really surprised you took the old logo away.
