Michigan Tech Winter Carnival Snow Statues 2009
Michigan Tech University’s annual Winter Carnival wrapped up this weekend. This year’s theme was “A Frigid Place Gets a Blast from Space”.
As always it was another exciting week of events including a beard competition, broomball, crowning of the queen, curling, human dog sled races, ice fishing, ice bowling, snowshoe races, snow volleyball, Stage Revue, tug-o-war in the snow, and of course all the traditional winter festivities. And of course the highlight is always the mammoth snow statues.
On Monday, MTU kicked off the week with about 24 inches of snow in less than eight hours. And by the end of the week most of that snow had melted with temperatures well above average stretching in to the 40s.
It looks like February could be a recording breaking month this winter for the Upper Peninsula with temperatures expected near 50 on Tuesday.
The beloved Huskies hockey team settled for a tie and a loss to Colorado College during the weekend. On Friday night they opened up with a 2-2 tie against the tigers and a 4-1 loss on Saturday night.
By late afternoon on Saturday it was clear that many of the statues had taken a beating from the warm sunny weekend and above freezing temperatures. Unfortunately, many of the most delicate details of the statues had melted or broken. I do have one critique from this year’s statue competition. Due to the number of Wall-E related sculptures there seemed to be a lack of originality, I believe there were three or four statues with Wall-E.

I went up on Friday afternoon, which was an absolutely beautiful day to be walking around Houghton. 35 degrees and sunny. Luckily the statues hadn’t melted much yet. The only one with significant melting damage was Buzz Lightyear.
Regardless of the number of Wall-E sculptures, the lifesize Wall-E and I became great friends. He held my hand while we were alone in the barren wasteland of planet Earth.
