Two Lighthouse Bed & Breakfasts in the Upper Peninsula
Depending on where your source there are about 12-15 lighthouses in the entire country that double as a bed and breakfast. Two are in the Upper Peninsula.
Having two of these right in the Upper Peninsula is incredible. Of course these re fresh water lighthouses, where as most of the other lighthouse bed and breakfasts are on the ocean in the states of Oregon, California, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine.
Big Bay Point Lighthouse
The Big Bay Point Lighthouse is located about 27 miles NW of Marquette in the town of Big Bay (for those of you not from the Upper Peninsula). We probably can’t describe the lighthouse any better than what’s already on their website…
High atop a cliff jutting into the clear, deep waters of Lake Superior, the Big Bay Point Lighthouse beckons adults in search of a secluded retreat from modern life. This unique bed-and-breakfast inn is one of the few surviving resident lighthouses in the country and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
For over a century, mariners have relied on Big Bay Point’s light to guide them along this remote and rocky stretch of Michigan coastline. Although automated in 1941, the romance and lore of the site are undimmed.
Sit before the fire in the living room, and recount the lighthouses you have seen and plan to see. Hike, bike, Ski, or snowshoe along the shore, or on the many trails in the area. Experience the deep solitude and unspoiled beauty of nature at the lighthouse inn.
Sounds like paradise.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Sand Hills Lighthouse B & B a number of years ago, and it was an incredible experience. Beautiful furnishings, wonderful hosts, excellent breakfast and even entertainment in the evening - one of the hosts is an accomplished pianist. Also the view from the light tower is just spectacular. I would recommend a stay just to enjoy the lighthouse but also to enjoy the close proximity to many scenic areas in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
My wife and I have stayed at the Big Bay Lighthouse B&B a couple of times. It was so beautiful and peaceful out there along Lake Superior. The hosts were great storytellers and we had a great time. Not sure how peaceful it is now that I hear they are developing condos or something right next to it.
We ate dinner at the Thunder Bay Inn where scenes from the movie, Anatomy of a Murder were filmed. The Inn was used as the location instead of the actual location of the Lumberjack Tavern where the real murder took place.
