What assumptions do people make about Yoopers?
People have a lot of weird misconceptions about yoopers. I've heard people refer to us as if we fell into the same classification as southern hicks, cow tippin' drunkards, trailer trash, and all kinds of weird things. Little do they know and I hope it stays that way. Call me selfish but I'm glad that what we have is somewhat of a secret to most. I think that is what makes this place so awesome. Pristine beauty and down to earth people--what more can you ask for?

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
I think my favorite place in the U.P. is out by Pinnacle Falls, North of the Dead River sort of by Big Bay. That whole area out there is a great place to hike, fish, camp, drink a good homebrew, or just be in general.

What's your favorite U.P. tradition? (pasties, etc.)
Aside from the obvious-pasties, saunas, and such, I think what my favorite tradition is just dealing with the trials and tribulations of feet of snow on a regular basis. I guess that falls into a way of life whether we like it or now rather than a tradition but lets not split hairs.

What's your favorite U.P. tradition? (pasties, etc.)
I love the food: the pasties, the Vernors, the Volwerths, the Trenary Bakery, the "squeeky cheese".... Yum!

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
The shores of Lake Superior. I especially love the cliffs of the Keweenaw and the long sandy beaches near Autrain.

If you grew up in the U.P. what was it like?
Wonderful! I sledded, skated, swam in the Sturgeon, played in hayfields and woods, took saunas on Weds and Sat nights, and went "visiting" after church on Sundays. My best school days were at Pelkie Elementary. One of my favorite memories is riding my bike into Pelkie to visit grandparents. I'd help my "Ammi" make carpets, "read" comics on the back of Finnish magazines, and be given treats, or money to buy a snack at the Co-op or Ralph's Station.

If you grew up in the U.P. what was it like?
I grew up in the Soo (You can see Cananda from the house). It is ridiculously cold in the winter. I would walk to school in -40 degree weather. That was intense. But the summers are beautiful. The sunsets are great. If you aren't there for the natural beauty and eccentric people, then it'll be hard to survive.

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
I love roaming the scenic coast of Marquette. Also, used to hike and camp at Monacle Lake State Park. Kayaking through the channels near the Soo locks. Swimming at the secret abandoned slate quarry that was filled by a natural spring = Awesome!

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
Wetmore Landing! The beach is pristine and protected, the rocks get so warm in the sun, and the trail to Little Presque Isle is a perfect hike.

What's your favorite U.P. tradition? (pasties, etc.)
Saying "hey?" at the end of every question, especially rhetorical ones! I've been here for one year and have just started to do this without realizing it.

How long have you lived in the U.P.?
I've only lived in Marquette for a year, but it has felt like home from the very first day. When I go out of town, I can't wait to get back here -- I've never experienced that before, so for me that's proof enough that the UP is something special.

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
Presque Isle. It's one of the reasons I love living in Marquette. I try to make it there 2 or 3 times a week for a walk.

What do you think makes the U.P. unique?
The Great Lakes. The fact the it's a Peninsula makes it very unique, and having several hundred miles of lake shore that happens to be the biggest lake in the world.

Great looking site, I'll be looking forward to seeing more. I came across it on Google by searching yooper blogs.
Nancy Sailor from Baraga, MI | #16

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
The coastline of Lake Superior along the Keweenaw Peninsula. Especially the lighthouses such as Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. Another remote lighthouse is Crisp Point, on the eastern end of Lake Superior. And I never get tired of driving the beautiful stretch of US 41 between Baraga and L'Anse along Keweenaw Bay - its a blessing to drive next to Lake Superior every day instead of a busy city with nothing but cars, houses, businesses and no trees or water!

How long have you lived in the U.P.?
Moved to Baraga in 1984 (from downstate Michigan) when my husband accepted a job with the Michigan DNR. Our boys were 2 and 1 years old at the time, so basically all of their growing up years have been in the U.P. Also attended Michigan Tech from 1974-1978, so I have now lived a total of 28 years between Baraga and Houghton! (I grew up in East Lansing from ages 4-18) No regrets about living up here, despite all of our extended family living in lower Michigan. I love the scenic beauty, the remoteness, the trees and shore-line and the quality of life that we were able to provide our sons.

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
Favorite place in the U.P. is Keewenaw Pennisula.Specifically Houghton/Hancock.

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
The breakers on the Houghton canal. Every vacation it's customary to walk to the lighthouse and walk the beach.

What is your most memorable U.P. snowstorm?
Feburary of 1977 . Two trolls from down under came up the Houghton for the Michigan Tech Winter Snow Carnival to get married.Although it snowed as usual the temp was what was worth remembering. It was below zero.Even though it was cold we still walked around to see all the statues

Love to see another website about the U.P
The Pirate from Painesdale, MI | amaih.blogpsot.com | #14

How long have you lived in the U.P.?
I've lived in the U.P. since Thanksgiving Day 1990, when I arrived in snowstorm, to attend Michigan Tech. By the time I drove from Detroit to Houghton, I had already decided to spend the rest of my life here.

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
Until the area was destroyed by an un-named local construction company for it's soil, sand, gravel and timber, my favorite place was a large rock in the woods next to a swamp, between Dodgeville, Atlantic Mine and Baltic. Now, it's probably the "Bear Hole" on the Falls River, in L'Anse, because my youngest daughter loves it there.

What is your most memorable U.P. snowstorm?
The combination of the Mid-Continent Rift system geology, glacial scouring and Lake Superior, which gives the area it's inherent, natural beauty and ruggedness. That and the pasty;)

Cool site, here. Love the T's!!
Al Salmi from Rapid River, MI | #13

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
Big Island Lake south of Munising. Wilderness area....no motor boats....total communion with nature. Any place along the Lake Superior shoreline. Brockway Mtn. Drive in the Keweenaw. and My boyhood home on the Squaw Creek in West Rock....the real "heart" of the U.P.

What is your most memorable U.P. snowstorm?
My wife and I were returning to NMU in the winter of 66 67 and we were one of the last cars to get through on US 41 south of Marquette where hundreds of NMU students became bogged down when the road became impassable. Second most memorable: Winter of '07 - '08 and NOT being there. Florida has been summer all winter long!!! (But we shall return!)

What do you think makes the U.P. unique?
The people of course. Nobody in the world is as down to earth as Yoopers. Being of Finnish heritage, pasties and sauna have been woven into our life since birth.

Comments:
My old student Paul Rajala, who is now almost as old as me, sent the website address to me. I shall send it to other YOOPERS as well.
Chris Cavalieri from Iron Mountain (hometown), MI | #12

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
I really enjoy many places, including Grand Marais, the Marquette Harbor, and the Estivant Pines in the Keweenaw. If I had to pick one, I'd say the area surrounding my hunting camp in the Northeastern quarter of Dickinson County. The wilderness is so beautiful and serene here. My great-grandfather hiked, skied, and hunted in the same places. There's a spirit there that lives on.

What do you think makes the U.P. unique?
Our unique values. We value everything about nature and keeping the wilderness free and protected. We value family, and realize how important the family is. We also have great accents, we're friendly, we're Old School in a good way. We've got many traditions to be proud of.

How long have you lived in the U.P.?
I lived in the U.P. from birth to age 19. At 19 I moved to East Lansing to begin my collegiate career at MSU. I've lived in the U.P. every summer since, but spend about 7-7.5 months a year living in East Lansing. I hope to get a teaching job in the U.P. over the next 3 months, so that I can live back home, in our beautiful Upper Peninsula.

Comments:
I'm a proud Yooper from Iron Mountain. I am currently in my 6th year at Michigan State University. I'm in my post-bachelor Teaching Internship year. I student-teach in an elementary school in Haslett. I miss the U.P. terribly most days. Yooper Steez is a cool website. Keep up the good work, fellow Yoopers!
Allison from East Lansing, MI | #11

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
I can't pick just one place...Pictured Rocks, the Porkies, and of course, Marquette.

What is your most memorable U.P. snowstorm?
It wasn't a snowstorm, but during the winter of 1994 Lake Superior almost completely froze over!

What's your favorite U.P. tradition? (pasties, etc.)
Mmmm..Pasties, Saunas, the dog sled races, and winter activities- skiing, snowshoeing...

Comments:
Great site! Can't wait for my t-shirt!
Gary from Virginia Beach, VA | #10

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
The South Platte River in Wyoming. The redwoods in California. Going to the Sun Road in Montana. Fijords in Norway. Russian women. Austrailian Opals. The jungles of Panama. The beaches on the Baltic. The beaches in Spain. The sand dunes in Saudi. The trout fishing in Scotland. The polar ice cap. Icebergs near Greenland. Dungeness Crabs in Washington State. Abolone. Cajun Music. Sport fishing on the gulf stream. The St. Louis Arch. Yellowstone National Park. L'anse Michigan.

If you grew up in the U.P. what was it like?
Cold. Colder. Coldest. Frost. Frostest. Frostier. Snow, snowest, snowier.

What best describes a Yooper?
Swampers. Flannel Shirts. Wood Smoke. Out of season Venison. Lack of an accent.

Comments:
Really its a great place. But passports should be checked on the boarders and at the bridge.
Lowell from L'Anse Across The Bay From Baraga, MI | #9

What's your favorite U.P. tradition? (pasties, etc.)
The Sauna and of course I don't do the sauna thing, but everyone else does. I am a poor Finn.

What is your most memorable U.P. snowstorm?
Back in 65 we were heading downstate to go skiing. It took us 3 and 1/2 hours to go 70 miles........we turned around and it took another 3 and 1/2 hours to get back to L'Anse. Not a good driving day.

What best describes a Yooper?
The accent.

Comments:
Hey Bugsy, We found you! Good luck with all your projects. We will follow you each step of the way. Lowell
Ashley from Menominee, MI | #8

What assumptions do people make about Yoopers?
People always assume that if you're from the U.P you don't know much besides hunting, fishing, and snow. Not true. However, feeding into the stereotypes and introducing foreigners to "Da 30 point buck" is very enjoyable.

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
My favorite place is my family cabin right on Lake Superior, off of Rice Lake Road, in Lake Linden, MI. So small....so great.

What do you think makes the U.P. unique?
The most profound thing that makes the U.P. unique is that all of the people are friendly. When I moved away from the U.P. for college I was SHOCKED that people didn't say hello as they passed on the street...and that I was almost always more polite and friendly to wait staff/customer service people than they were to me. This small piece only makes me love the U.P. even more. It's so simple!

Comments:
The U.P. truly the best kept secret of the U.S. Although lots of people know nothing about it, if you do, you're quite lucky! I've definitely noticed that if you come from the U.P. you're hard working, down to earth, and have good priorities...to each their own! I would never change having grown up and loved the U.P.
Orlie Bowman from Truckee, CA | #7

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
McCarty's Cove, Marquette in late August/September when the waves are mackin' hard yet its still warm. 2nd Fave: Big Bay...need I say more?

What's your favorite U.P. tradition? (pasties, etc.)
New Year's Balldrop in Marquette. Also the "Say yah to da UP, eh?" stickers...those things are all over, man. I (now) live in a small mountain town in California and there's at least two of them on cars here...I've seen multiple ones in San Francisco as well as way up north in Humboldt county on a van owned by a guy who lives on Davis Way in Arcata, CA, if you ever happen to go there!

What do you think makes the U.P. unique?
If you ever get your car stuck in the snow, there will be numerous Yoopers who will fight over getting to you first so they can rip your vehicle out with their truck. And Pasties, of course.

Comments:
I grew up in Marquette and went to NMU.
Robin from Marquette, MI | #6

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
Brimley . . . both sets of grandparents have a cabin on the point that separates Lake Superior from the Whaiska Bay. Now, my dad, grandparents, and two sets of Aunts/Uncles live on that point and its the most beautiful place in the world

What do you think makes the U.P. unique?
A friend, and proud Yooper, once coined the description, "The UP is a cultural and evolutionary cul-du-sac." I think that pretty much sums it up.

What's your favorite U.P. tradition? (pasties, etc.)
The UP 200 in Marquette, The Waterfront Festival in Menominee, the July 4th fireworks in Bay Mills, and the Noquemanon in Negaunne - Marquette

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
My favorite place in the UP has to be the canyon falls area. I'm a big fan of water and there's plenty of it there. Plus if you hike up past the marked trail you can jump off the cliffs into a few swimming holes- it's a rush!

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
My other favorite place is driving up US41 to Copper Harbor on a nice fall day. The road up there is perfect and there are lots of little shops and restaurants to stop at along the way!

Comments:
OMG- finally a decent site involving the UP!
Angela Duncan from Ferndale, MI | www.angeladuncan.wordpress.com | #2

What was your first U.P. experience?
I was 13 years old when I first visited the U.P. I grew up in northern Michigan, but the U.P. is a whole new level of "North!" We went to the Soo Locks, Whitefish Point, and saw some great rivers and waterfalls. I had no idea that we had such great, "Colorado-looking" rocks and falls.

What assumptions do people make about Yoopers?
They probably assume that Yoopers are less educated that city folks, but they're wrong. Some of the most wildly intelligent, sincere, down-to-earth, fabulous people I know are Yoopers. They do talk funny sometimes, though.

Comments:
Awesome site! I'm going to keep checking back for updates. Totally rad.
Neal Foster from Peshtigo, WI | #1

Where is your favorite place in the Upper Peninsula?
Lake of the Clouds. Usually at least twice a year during the summer my parents would bring me there to do some hiking. It's been a while since I was there, but always a favorite.

What's your favorite U.P. tradition? (pasties, etc.)
The twice annual Lions/Packers game. I admit that I'm always cheering for the Packers, and we've done pretty well in recent years against the Lions (or has it just been that the lions have done poorly?). Regardless, it's a great tradition in the UP with a population of fans so well split between the two teams.

Comments:
Great work! Thanks for sharing this site with me right away and coming my way for feedback. The UP is an incredible place for exactly this kind of project. Keep in touch, and I'll try to think of a good place to get that "steez" photo.
